What are Google Play System Updates on
No only Android receives a big annual firmware updateiel, but there are also smaller monthly updates. Google Play security updates are one of them, but they differ from monthly security patches. This is what they do.
What is a Google Play system update?
Updates to the Google Play system were introduced in Android 10 (originally known as Main Project ). It is Required for all Android 10 or newer devices to include Google Play system updates. While phone and tablet manufacturers are responsible for providing security patches, Google does send system updates Google Play.
With Android 10, Google took 12 main components and turned them into "modules. Google can now process these modules independently, without sending a full firmware update or involving the manufacturer of the phone.
System updates from Google Play primarily address security issues, but they are notare not the same as the monthly security patches. The two are responsible for different things. All devices with Android 10 and later can get a Google Play security update, whether or not they have the latest security patches.
A good example of what system updates from Google Play might have helped is the Stagefright Security Bug in 2015. Stagefright was an attack on a media player component on Android. The media framework is one of the 12 components that can be updated through the system updates of Google Play. Many devices have never been patched to protect against Stagefright because it required a firmware update.
This is the most important thing about system updates from Google Play - they don't require any firmware or phone manufacturer updates. It does not meanthat Google can bypass your phone manufacturer completely and immediately bring you the latest features. However, that does mean that you won't have to worry about some more critical security issues.
