Why the dragon Mushu will not be in the version
While special effects will surely be used in the live-action adaptation of Mulan , they will not go so far as to recreate Mushu , the little dragon from the animated version. The director of the feature film explained that the presence of this character would have disturbed the realism of this new version.
Appreciating Disney animated films almost always amounts to welcoming the songs composed for each of them rather favorably, and which are not limited to the end credits. In the case of the film "live Mulan, those who feared a musical could be reassured to learn, last year, that the characters of the feature film will not use their vocal cords for this purpose.
If we also already knew that the dragon Mushu would not be there , visibly replaced by a phoenix, the reason for this absence had not been officially communicated until now. In an interview with USA Today (article apparently inaccessible to European residents), director Niki Caro explained why Mushu was not selected for this project.
No Mushu in the "live version of Mulan so as not to upset the Chinese audience
The filmmaker mentioned the realistic aspect of the film which made it difficult to integrate Mushu as is:
" We were very inspired by what Mushu brought to the animation, which was humor and levity, and the challenge was to bring that to Mulan's true relationships with her fellow soldiers. We also loved what it was. was Mushu in the animated film,he was Mulan’s confidante and putting her into real action was one of the purposes of confronting her with the realism of her journey and for her to form these relationships with her fellow soldiers. So there was certainly a lot to work on in this department.
Before recognizing a precaution not to attract the wrath of the Chinese public.
"The dragon is a sign of respect and it is a sign of strength and power, and using it as a silly sidekick has not been very well received by mainstream Chinese audiences.
A situation that may recall the controversy surrounding Vaiana, the legend at the end of the world where the legendary figure of Maui was represented in the form of an obese character.
Except that this "famous traditional Chinese public did not need Mushu to judge the quality of this Mulan very perfectible, considering it thus too Western in their eyes and comprisinghistorical inconsistencies. Not to mention the public stance of its main interpreter in favor of the Hong Kong authorities.
Mulan version 2020 will be officially available to the French public from December 4 on the platform Disney +, at no additional charge.
