The Megalodon compared to a human being - Credits: Oliver E. Demuth
Little is known about the Megalodon , most of the fossils found being teeth. However, this did not prevent a team of scientists from determining with precision the size of this giant predator, ancestor of the shark which sowed terror in the oceans 23 to 4 million years ago.
18 meters on average and sometimes much more
If the teeth of the Megalodon are the main traces found, is also what gave it its name, Megalodon meaning "giant teeth . These are the teeth that British paleontologists used to determine the size of the predator. According to them, he had to mmeasure 18 meters on average once an adult, and much more for some specimens . This makes it one of the largest and most formidable predators to have existed.
Scientists have come to this size very little thanks to a peculiarity of shark anatomy. Indeed, unlike most animals and humans, a shark's entire body grows in proportion to its age . Man sees his proportions change as he grows, the head of a baby being proportionately larger in a newborn.
Thus, it is possible to determine the size of each Element of Megalodon anatomy. Its dorsal fin alone is already larger than an adult male . This exceptional size was made possible by the abundance of food. The Megalodon mainly fed on whales and other marine mammals. It is now made popular by catast moviesrophes and through video games , even Battlefield 4, one of the best-selling games of the last decade , included it as an easter-egg. However, it does not appear in the Teeth of the Sea, nor even in its very recent" wemake made by fans for the film's 45th anniversary .
